Challenge
As a product designer consultant for the Bank of Brazil, our challenge was to address the lack of design skills, inconsistent designs, and limited resources within the enterprise. We needed to build and distribute a comprehensive design system that could be utilized by multiple user experience ambassadors and product teams across the organization.
Approach
Working alongside two other designers, my role involved creating and specifying components in Figma. Our approach consisted of a meticulous process:
Research
We thoroughly analyzed where and how each component was used in our digital products. We conducted research on user needs, market trends, and best practices in UX design.
Documentation
Once a component was identified and studied, we documented it extensively to provide clear guidance for both designers and front-end developers. This documentation included specifications, guidelines, and usage examples.
Publication
We published the components in the official design system library, ensuring easy access and adoption across the organization.
Solution
By creating tens of components and establishing a comprehensive design system, we provided a standardized framework that enabled designers and product teams to work more efficiently and effectively. The design system served as a centralized resource for reusable components, ensuring consistency and promoting a cohesive user experience.
Impact
The implementation of the design system had significant impact:
Faster Time-to-Market: Designers were able to leverage the pre-built components, reducing the time required to design and develop new products or features.
Improved Design Consistency: The design system established clear guidelines and standards, ensuring a consistent visual language across all digital products. This consistency enhanced the overall brand experience for users.
Key Takeaways
Throughout this project, I evolved into a Figma and design system ninja. The experience highlighted the importance of establishing a robust design system within large enterprises. The key takeaways from this project include:
The value of research and understanding user needs to create effective design components.
The significance of documentation in facilitating collaboration and ensuring consistent implementation.
The positive impact of a comprehensive design system on the overall efficiency and effectiveness of product design teams.
